When I have an impulse to ask questions about the supervisee’s style of relating to clients, I do not avoid or defer them. When I see a pattern of behaviour (like a number of clients leaving without ending), I name it, and invite shared exploration and monitoring. At some level, I knew at the time that I could and should do all of those things, but lacked courage and confidence in my assessment initially and put it off, and then named it too tentatively. This made it harder later, when my capacity for empathy with her was compromised by my anxieties for the clients.

Supervising a more experienced colleague A final example of a developmental challenge to a novice supervisor came from working with a colleague who was well respected and a more experienced counsellor than myself. She had approached me because of some shared theoretical base, and my experience in academic settings, and a wish to learn how to do more short-term, focused work, on the basis of a recommendation from her existing supervisor, whom I also knew.
