Whatever their roles, the family valued intellectual achievement and supported their son Kenyon's desire to be an artist at a time when such a career choice was both unusual and financially hazardous. Kenyon studied as an adolescent at the McMicken Art School in Cincinnati, for one year at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 187677, then for five years between 1877 and 1882 at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He returned to Ohio in the winter of 1882 and moved to New York, the country's art center, in the fall of 1883.
He was familiar with the great works of Rembrandt from reproductions and study and had seen a few in Paris while a student. This old master remained a favorite, and Cox especially appreciated his use of light and shadow to create reflective moods. The remainder of the celebrated Dutch school left him cold. He thought their landscapes were false to nature in using dark colors and weak light. They were also repetitive and frankly boring. Much of what Cox saw on the trip buttressed his critical writing, but his interest had begun to focus on Italian art, whose richness and classical nature matched his idealism and need for intense but controlled emotion.
22 Peers soon realized that he was energetic and committed and made him a fixture among those who tended to artistic affairs, and who in their ways were as significant as artists who won exhibition prizes. He became important in the Society of American Artists, which younger people established in 1875 in reaction against the National Academy's hanging policies and general conservatism. He was elected to the organization in 1882 while in Paris and regularly showed in its spring exhibitions. He became an officer, handled a good deal of its publicity, and was often on special committees to judge and hang the annual shows.
