He would be remembered across all China as ‘the illustrious and perfect sage’ and his influence begat a system of governance and a wider world-view that we still recognise today: one that bears his name, which was Confucius.
He was in exile at that time, along with hundreds of families who supported him. It is certain, though, that he had informers who brought him snatches of news from Athens post-haste. The site of the Acropolis had special resonance, because of actions taken in that place by Cleisthenes’ ancestors more than a century before – actions that Isagoras and the Spartans had chosen to rake up as the pretext for his exile, rather than his proposed political reforms or his opposition to Isagoras.
