In 2011, my parents—both 40 | bitch f e m i n i s t r e s p o n s e t o p o p c u lt u r e the people who stay here tend to stay here for life; these were our kids, our grandkids, our families, and our neighbors who were losing jobs, losing pay, and losing livelihoods. This movement of South Dakotan teachers, neighbors, and parents managed to get the cuts lowered, softening the impact of the austerity measures throughout the state. Just as my Republican parents moved toward the center with the introduction of new education policies, progressives in South Dakota often shift to the center as well.
My South Dakotan heritage means I understand both the right-wing gun enthusiasts and the liberals who think guns are a bad idea. Straddling the world between progressive idealism and conservative practicality is where I find myself—and many of my South Dakotan compatriots—sitting. And while the state has also historically been red in terms of its education policies, recent conservative austerity measures have resulted in a shift in the political climate. Ignoring what is happening in ONE CANNOT DISCUSS POVERTY, HUNGER, RAPE, OR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN SOUTH DAKOTA WITHOUT ALSO DISCUSSING THE WAYS IN WHICH THESE PARTICULAR PROBLEMS FALL ALONG RACIST, COLONIALIST LINES. Women are, again, at the forefront of this battle as they fight to preserve their families and their culture, and with good reason. Many studies show that Native children raised in white homes have an increased incidence of suicide and risk for drug use later in life. White progressive activists within the state tend to see Native issues as a major part of their politics, because one cannot discuss poverty, hunger, rape, or domestic violence in South Dakota without also 42 | bitch f e m i n i s t r e s p o n s e t o p o p c u lt u r e South Dakota means ignoring a large part of what makes America the nation it is—a mishmash of cultures and ideas, but one in which listening to your neighbors and recognizing their humanity is vital to forward momentum.
