Duffy (1962) comments, "Spontaneous changes in activation, irregularities in response and variability in physiological functioning have frequently been found in certain neurotic and psychotic conditions. Such phenomena may prove to be of greater significance in behavior p a t h o logy than differences in the intensity of response" (p. 315). Lacey and Lacey (1958b) also found that continuous recordings of both palmar skin resistance and of heart rate over periods of 15 min showed arrhythmic fluctuations.

There is some evidence for a genetic factor in this balance (Jost and Sontag, 1944). Those words with high initial reactivity whose exploration was first invited and then cut off, showed marked increase in reactivity after the interview.
