Before 1720, the only important journals published in France were the weekly Gazette, an official paper which held the monopoly of political news, the monthly Mercure de France and the weekly Journal des savants, the last being the only one to deal with science, while also covering much else. None enjoyed a wide readership and little impact was made upon public opinion before 1750.
