Consequently it has not been easy to either relate the studies to one another or to form an overall impression. Economists have been mainly interested in poverty at a macro or economy wide perspective and much of the research has revolved around the development of appropriate mathematical specifications for measures of poverty and the application of these measures to large data bases drawn from national surveys. These statistical measures have been based largely on income and, while narrowly defined, are tractable.
